DISCOVERY AND RESEARCH
Our research with Latino communities in Arizona revealed key insights for environmental advocacy design. Visual storytelling connecting environmental concerns with voter engagement resonated strongly with our target audience. Bilingual messaging and culturally authentic representation proved essential for community engagement.
STRATEGY + CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT
Campaign Goals:
Increase pledge-to-vote commitments from target communities
Build recognition of the connection between voting and environmental impact
Create a visually distinctive campaign that could work across multiple platforms
Initial Design Concepts: I began by sketching various concepts that merged visual elements of nature (plants, seeds, growth) with voting symbols (ballots, registration forms). These early iterations explored different color palettes drawn from natural environments and cultural references.
Design Process: After presenting initial concepts to the ChispaAZ Team, I refined the approach to focus on organic shapes and growth motifs. The logo evolved through several iterations to ensure it was:
Recognizable at different scales
Effective in both digital and print applications
Culturally resonant
Bilingual-friendly
Campaign Results & Design Impact
The Votando Y Plantando Campaign successfully:
Reached and resonated with underrepresented voters from the target communities
Strengthened community connections through culturally relevant design
Communicated environmental justice concepts through accessible visual design
This environmental advocacy project demonstrated the power of culturally authentic design in political campaigns. Working with people in our target communities ensured our visual identity resonated with underrepresented voters while maintaining consistency across digital and print platforms.
